History of Ebenezer Fire Company

 

The first meeting was held September 2,1943 in the basement of Shuey's Store. The meeting was called after a fire destroyed the home of Clarence W. Deck and Family. The first meeting was attended by 14 men and Frank A. Shuey was asked to serve as temporary chairman, he was later elected to serve as the first president.The rest of the officers were Samuel T. Kurtz, Vice President; Harry C.Fortna, Secretary; Martin R. Levan Sr., Financial Secretary; Edgar Bachman, Treasurer; Raymond Clemens, Fire Chief; John Tschudy, Asst. Chief; Daniel B. Brandt, Paul Arnold, and Henry Beck, Trustees. A motion was made by Samuel T. Kurtz to name the organization EBENEZER FIRE COMPANY.

The Ebenezer Fire Company was incorporated May 22, 1946 and on June 26, 1946 a special meeting was called to purchase a plot of ground for a fire hall. The land was purchased from Norman C. Albert for the sum of $ 3,000. January 16,1947 the Ebenezer Fire Police was formed. On May 1,1947 a contract was awarded for $10,000 to Lloyd B. Horst to construct the first portion of the fire hall.

The cornerstone, layed on November 23,1947,
contained the following articles; by laws of

the fire company, charter of the company,
cornerstone dedication book, new
testament, 1947 U.S. coins , copy
of the Lebanon Daily News, subscribers
names, and active members of the fire
company and Ladies Auxiliary.

The first fire engine, a Studebaker was purchased from Goodwill Fire Company of Myerstown for the sum of $500 on June 6,1949 the old engine room was erected. This engine room has been used to house the five engines owned by the fire company. The second fire engine cost $13,500 and was purchased in 1954, it was a Mack fire engine. The third engine was a Seagrave fire engine and was purchased in1967 for $32,000. In 1977 a fourth engine was a GMC Mini Pumper which was built by Hamerly it was purchased for $ 34,500. In 1987 the Seagrave was sold and a Sutphen pumper was purchased for $210,000
